Description & Learning objectives

It is important to note that foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a preventable condition. Therefore, it is vital that health care workers communicate the dangers of drinking alcohol when pregnant. It is particularly important within the first two trimesters of the pregnancy, which is when some pregnant ladies are unaware they are pregnant

As an early years practitioner, you may come across children with FAS. This course provides an introduction to foetal alcohol syndrome for early years practitioners. The course covers the causes, symptoms, and long-term consequences of FAS, as well as strategies for prevention and intervention.

The learning outcomes of this course are as follows:

  • To understand the mechanism of how alcohol causes foetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD)
  • To understand foetal alcohol syndrome and the risks
  • To explore Foetal Alcohol Spectrum and the Different Categories of FASD
  • To recognise the signs and symptoms of FAS
  • To understand the long-term consequences of FAS
  • To develop strategies to prevent FAS and support families
  • To understand the legal framework and responsibilities for early years practitioners

This course is CPD accredited and adheres to Ofsted regulations and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
